At least 11 people, including three women and a 10-year-old girl, lost their lives in lightning strikes across Jharkhand over the last 24 hours , highlighting the dangers posed by severe weather conditions during the monsoon season.

According to police officials, the fatalities were reported from Khunti, Ramgarh, Lohardaga, Deoghar, Jamtara, Sahibganj and Giridih districts . Khunti recorded the highest number of deaths with four people killed in separate incidents, while Ramgarh reported two fatalities.

Most of the victims were engaged in outdoor activities when the lightning strikes occurred. Some were working in agricultural fields, others were returning home, fishing, or playing cricket. In several cases, victims had taken shelter under trees during rain, a practice that experts warn can significantly increase the risk of lightning-related injuries and deaths.

The incidents occurred amid unstable weather conditions associated with monsoon activity , which often brings thunderstorms, strong winds and frequent lightning across eastern India. Rural areas are particularly vulnerable as a large section of the population works outdoors in farms and open spaces, increasing exposure to weather-related hazards.

Apart from the fatalities, three people sustained burn injuries after lightning struck while they were playing cricket in Khunti district. They were admitted to a government hospital in Ranchi for treatment.

The tragedy underscores the need for stronger disaster preparedness and public awareness measures . Authorities and disaster management agencies regularly advise people to avoid open fields, water bodies and isolated trees during thunderstorms. Timely weather alerts, community awareness campaigns and adherence to safety guidelines can play a crucial role in reducing lightning-related casualties.

With lightning remaining one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in India, experts stress the importance of taking precautionary measures, especially during the monsoon months when thunderstorm activity is at its peak.
