Eleven-year-old Indian karting sensation Atiqa Mir made a spectacular debut in the WSK Super Master Karting Series over the weekend, becoming the first Indian to secure second place in qualifying in the highly competitive OKNJ junior category .

The OKNJ (OK–National Junior) category is a high-performance junior karting class meant for young drivers transitioning from entry-level racing to professional motorsport. Designed primarily for racers aged 12 to 14 , the category also allows exceptionally talented younger drivers to compete after meeting strict licensing, safety and performance criteria. OKNJ karts are single-gear, direct-drive machines with significantly more power than Mini karts, capable of speeds exceeding 120 kmph , demanding sharp throttle control, precise braking and strong physical endurance. The category is highly competitive and often features experienced international drivers, making it a crucial proving ground for future single-seater racers. Success in OKNJ is widely seen as a gateway to elite racing pathways, which is why Atiqa Mir’s entry at just 11 years old and her standout performance is considered particularly remarkable.

Stepping up from the Mini category (ages 8–11) to Junior (12–14) in 2026, Atiqa faced a field of 37 experienced male drivers . Despite being one of the youngest on the grid, she showcased exceptional skill and speed, narrowly missing pole position by just a tenth of a second with a stellar lap of 49.76 seconds . Her performance marked a historic milestone as the only female driver on the grid and the first Indian to achieve P2 in this class on debut.

Atiqa’s strong showing continued in the heat races on Friday and Saturday, where she started from the front row in all three heats and finished 4th, 6th, and 7th. She also recorded the Fastest Lap in heat 1 , underscoring her impressive pace and adaptability in the high-powered OKNJ karts .

However, the pre-final on Sunday brought challenges. Starting fourth on the grid, her kart failed to start on the pre-grid , forcing her to start 18th in the final. Complications continued as she was pushed off the track in Turn 1 , dropping to 22nd. Demonstrating remarkable composure and racing acumen, Atiqa recovered to finish 14th , a commendable result given the circumstances.

Speaking about her debut, Atiqa said, “I love the OKNJ category as the karts are very fast and power is instant. We worked hard as a team to get me up to speed. I wasn’t expecting P2 in qualifying, almost achieving pole in my debut is incredible. Pity about the pre-final, but that is motor racing.”

Her father, Asif Mir , a former Formula Asia Vice-Champion, praised her performance: “Atiqa has natural talent and has beaten some of the best karters in the world. Seeing her initially hold pole in qualifying with the Indian flag on top was a proud moment. This debut exceeded all expectations, and we will continue to refine her skills.”

Atiqa’s historic performance not only marks a significant achievement for Indian karting but also highlights the rise of young female talent on the international motorsport stage. With her skill, determination, and early success, she is poised to become a future star in global racing .
