12 Killed, 23 Missing as Deadly Wildfire Ravages Southern Spain

At least 12 people were killed and 23 remain missing after a fast-moving wildfire swept through the Los Gallardos-Bédar area in Almería, southern Spain , as an intense heatwave and strong winds fueled one of the country's deadliest blazes in recent years.

Spanish authorities said several victims were found inside burnt-out vehicles , while others died as flames rapidly engulfed parts of the region. At least eight people were injured , including four with serious burns. Officials believe many of the victims were foreign nationals, though formal identification is still underway.

The wildfire has scorched more than 3,100 hectares of forest and farmland, forcing the evacuation of around 800 residents and tourists . Nearly 200 evacuees have been accommodated in temporary shelters as emergency teams continue search and rescue operations.

More than 500 firefighters , supported by aerial resources and Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME) , are battling the blaze across difficult terrain. Authorities said the fire remains active, with high temperatures, dry vegetation and gusty winds complicating containment efforts.

The cause of the wildfire has not been officially confirmed , although investigators are examining whether a fallen power line may have sparked the blaze.

Calling it the deadliest wildfire in the history of Andalusia , regional president Juan Manuel Moreno expressed grief over the tragedy, saying the region was devastated by the loss of lives. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also conveyed condolences and urged residents to strictly follow official evacuation instructions as emergency crews work to contain the fire and search for those still unaccounted for.

Spain has been experiencing an intense summer heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in several regions, significantly increasing the risk of wildfires across the country.
