16-Year-Old Girl Falls Into 20-Foot Borewell in Kanpur, Rescue Operation Underway

A 16-year-old girl fell into a defunct borewell, reportedly around 20 feet deep, after a soil collapse at a house in a village under the Maharajganj police station area of Kanpur on Friday, prompting a major rescue operation involving police, fire personnel and heavy machinery.

According to officials, information about the incident was received at the control room on Friday morning. Fire and police teams from nearby stations were immediately rushed to the spot, while a JCB machine was deployed to assist in the excavation and search efforts.

Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma said the incident was treated as highly sensitive and that emergency personnel had begun rescue operations soon after reaching the site. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also alerted as authorities intensified efforts to locate and safely bring out the girl.

Rescuers are using a combination of mechanical excavation and manual search operations, with teams working continuously at the site. As of the latest available reports, there was no official confirmation regarding whether the girl had been rescued or details about her condition.

A report by The Times of India said the girl had fallen into a nearly 20-foot-deep defunct borewell while preparing to tie a rakhi on her brother's wrist during Raksha Bandhan celebrations. However, officials quoted in the initial report described the incident as a fall caused by a soil collapse, and the exact circumstances remain subject to official confirmation.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by unsecured borewells and open shafts. In a separate incident earlier in July, a four-year-old child who fell into an open borewell in Dhanaura village was declared brought dead after an 18-19-hour rescue operation involving multiple agencies.

Authorities continue their efforts at the Kanpur site, with further updates awaited on the girl's rescue and condition.
