17-Year-Old Indian-Origin Boy Charged With Killing Mother, Brother in US

A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager, Arjun Aravind, has been charged with the alleged murder of his mother and younger brother at their home in Acton, Massachusetts, in a case that investigators say involved disturbing online searches about killing family members.

Aravind faces two counts of murder, along with two counts each of assault and battery on a household or family member and assault and battery. He is also charged with using a vehicle without authority and theft of a motor vehicle, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The victims were identified as 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son, Siddharth Aravind. Police found their bodies inside the family’s Martha Lane home on Tuesday after Arjun’s father contacted authorities when he was unable to reach his family. A tutor who was scheduled to visit the house had also been unable to make contact. Investigators said Siddharth was found on the first floor, while Sudha was found in the finished basement. Both had suffered obvious trauma, although the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet determined their exact causes and manners of death. Authorities are also investigating what weapon, if any, was used.

Authorities have not established a definitive motive for the alleged killings. However, investigators said Arjun had recently displayed concerning behaviour and had allegedly used the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies about killing his family. Officials said some of his online activity involved fictional stories, characters and scenarios in which threats to his family appeared to be present. The searches are being examined as part of the investigation and may provide clues about possible premeditation or his state of mind. Authorities have not said that the searches alone establish why the killings allegedly occurred.

Police said Arjun allegedly fled the house in his mother's car after the incident. He was found inside the vehicle early Wednesday in nearby Wayland while officers were responding to an unrelated alarm and was taken into custody without incident.

Because Arjun is 17, the case involves both juvenile and adult-court proceedings. The Juvenile Court does not have jurisdiction over the murder charge, meaning he is expected to face the murder and related assault charges in Concord District Court, while the remaining charges were handled through Juvenile Court proceedings. Arjun is accused, not convicted, and the charges will have to be proven in court.
