Japan's home favourite Naomi Osaka suffered a shock defeat at the Pan Pacific Open on Thursday, falling to Slovakia's Mia Pohankova, an 18-year-old wildcard entrant who produced a composed performance to reach the quarterfinals.

The unseeded Pohankova defeated the seventh-seeded Osaka 6-3, 7-5 in a match lasting one hour and 35 minutes, ending the former world No. 1's campaign in front of her home supporters. The Slovak teenager, who turned 18 just a week ago, showed impressive composure to overcome the four-time Grand Slam champion.

Pohankova's victory marks another significant milestone in her rapidly developing career. She won the 2025 Wimbledon junior singles title and is now making her presence felt on the senior circuit with a notable breakthrough in Tokyo.

She will next face American Alycia Parks in the quarterfinals. Parks booked her place in the last eight with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Australia's Kimberly Birrell.

Osaka had entered the tournament with momentum after defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the opening round. However, she was unable to build on that win as Pohankova took control of the contest and secured the biggest victory of her campaign so far.

Elsewhere in Thursday's round-of-16 action, Canada's Leylah Fernandez defeated fifth-seeded Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6 (8) to advance.

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina was scheduled to face Yulia Putintseva in a later match. Both players were born in Russia but represent Kazakhstan.

The tournament had also lost two seeded players to injuries earlier, with second seed Maja Chwalinska withdrawing because of a left-thigh injury and fourth seed Belinda Bencic pulling out with a right-ankle problem.

Pohankova's upset has added fresh intrigue to the Tokyo tournament, with the teenage Wimbledon junior champion now looking to carry her momentum into the quarterfinals.
