
1.93 m of Shock: Pooja Singh Breaks 14 Year Old National High Jump Record, Wins Gold
At the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong , India witnessed a landmark moment as Pooja Singh delivered a stunning performance in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.93 m to win gold and set a new national record.
The 18 year old from Haryana went past the previous senior women’s national record of 1.92 m , which had stood for 14 years since it was set by Sahana Kumari . Her winning leap not only earned her the gold medal but also placed her firmly at the top of Indian athletics history books.
Her journey to this moment makes the feat even more remarkable. Coming from a mason’s family , Pooja has trained under challenging circumstances and made a strong comeback after being sidelined for 15 months due to a quadriceps injury. Her return to competition has now produced one of India’s most inspiring sporting performances.
She executed her record jump using the Fosbury Flop technique , showcasing excellent timing, control, and confidence. Her consistency throughout the event and her final clearance of 1.93 m also ensured qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games .
Her achievement drew praise from across the sporting fraternity. Tejaswin Shankar lauded her technique, calling it exceptional and hinting that her potential is still unfolding, describing it as “sky is the limit.”
