2 College students found dead in Surat, Police say they searched ChatGPT before suicide

Two young women , both college students aged between 18 and 20 , were found dead inside the bathroom of a temple in Gujarat’s Surat city , prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspected suicide. Officials said anaesthesia injections were recovered from the spot , while one of the deceased had reportedly searched ChatGPT about “how to commit suicide.”

According to police, the incident occurred late Friday night at the Swaminarayan Temple in Saniya village , which falls under the Dindoli police station limits . The two students had been missing since Friday afternoon , after which their families approached the police seeking help in tracing them.

Assistant Commissioner of Police N.P. Gohil said the families informed police after the two stopped answering calls, although their mobile phones remained active . Investigators traced the phone location to Saniya village , following which a police team began searching the surrounding area.

“During the search, we found their scooter parked near the temple . CCTV footage later showed the two walking towards the temple bathroom ,” Gohil said. When the door remained locked for an unusually long time, it was forced open by police , and the pair was found unconscious inside .

The two women were immediately shifted to Civil Hospital and SMIMER Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival .

During the search of the bathroom, police recovered suspected anaesthesia injections , raising questions about how the substances were obtained. Officers also found suicide-related photographs in the gallery of one victim’s phone , along with a record of a ChatGPT search related to suicide methods .

Police said the two were close friends since their school days , though they were studying in different colleges in Surat . Investigators are currently examining their digital activity, personal background, and possible reasons that may have led to the tragic incident. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after post-mortem and forensic analysis, officials said.
