Mumbai was battered by torrential monsoon rain on Saturday, with several parts of the city receiving nearly 200 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours , triggering widespread flooding, traffic disruptions and damage to infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to continue until July 6 , urging residents to remain cautious.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) , the eastern suburbs recorded 186 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 8 pm , while the western suburbs received 168 mm and the island city recorded 129 mm . Vikhroli West emerged as the worst affected area with over 260 mm of rain, while Powai, Bhandup, Malad, Kandivali, Jogeshwari and Andheri also received more than 210 mm .

The relentless downpour, coupled with high tide, left several roads submerged and severely disrupted transport services. Waterlogging on railway tracks between Nalasopara and Virar delayed Western Railway services, while operations on the Main and Harbour lines were also affected. The Andheri subway and several roads in Chembur, Vikhroli, Chandivali, Sakinaka and Vile Parle were temporarily closed due to flooding.

The BMC reported 64 tree fall incidents and eight cases of house or wall collapses across the city. In Byculla , a two storey building collapsed, injuring three people, while a road caved in near an under construction site in Bhandup , trapping a vehicle. No fatalities were reported in either incident.

With the IMD's red alert in force, schools and colleges were declared closed on Saturday afternoon. More than 10,000 civic personnel , supported by 448 dewatering pumps and 19 mini pumping stations , were deployed to tackle flooding. Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from the seafront and remain alert to health risks such as leptospirosis .

The monsoon's impact extended beyond Mumbai. Palghar witnessed severe flooding, where authorities rescued over 180 people , while a six year old child died after being washed away in floodwaters. Pune also reported waterlogging and landslides, though no injuries were recorded. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to citizens across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the Pune Nashik belt to follow official weather advisories as Maharashtra braces for more heavy rain over the coming days.
