Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has approved ₹22.14 crore for the restoration and repair of 454 tanks in Vizianagaram district, aiming to improve irrigation and drinking water availability across rural areas. The approval follows representations received from the district, with the Panchayat Raj Department directed to undertake the works.

The initiative aims to revive water bodies that play a crucial role in supporting agriculture and meeting the everyday water requirements of rural communities. The restoration programme is expected to improve rainwater storage, strengthen water distribution systems and help villages make better use of available water resources.

The works will be undertaken during the 2026–27 financial year using the material component funds available to the district under the VB–G RAM G scheme. The proposed interventions include removing accumulated silt from tanks, restoring water supply channels and repairing sluice gates to improve their operational efficiency.

These measures are intended to improve the storage capacity of the tanks and facilitate the movement of water to agricultural lands and surrounding habitations. The government aims to start the works at the earliest and restore all 454 tanks to improve their contribution to the district’s water management system.

The condition of tanks and their connecting channels directly affects water availability, particularly in rural areas that depend on local storage systems. Restoring these structures could help retain more rainwater and improve the utilisation of seasonal rainfall.

The completion of the restoration works is expected to benefit hundreds of villages across Vizianagaram district by improving access to water for farming and domestic consumption. Better irrigation availability could support agricultural operations, while improved storage and distribution may help rural communities meet essential water needs.

The approval follows requests from residents seeking repairs and improvements to local water resources. By allocating funds and assigning the work to the Panchayat Raj Department, the administration has moved to address these demands through infrastructure development.

The project is expected to strengthen the district’s rural water network and improve the long-term utility of its traditional tanks. Timely execution and effective maintenance will be important to ensure that the restored structures deliver sustained benefits to farmers and village communities.
