A 23-year-old woman from Kerala has given a new lease of life to six patients through multi-organ donation after being declared brain-dead following a road accident, in a case that has drawn widespread appreciation for her family’s consent amid personal tragedy.

The donor, Naomi Vincent , a native of Vadakkanchery in Thrissur district, had recently completed her post-graduation in Psychology from St Thomas College, Thrissur , and was travelling to Thiruvananthapuram to join a new job when the accident occurred near Valakom in Kottarakkara around 4 am on June 25. The car she was travelling in collided with a lorry, leaving Naomi, her mother Gypsy Thankachan and brother Joel Vincent seriously injured, with Joel driving the vehicle. All three were initially admitted to a private hospital in Kottarakkara, after which Naomi was shifted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for advanced care.

She was declared brain-dead at 9.28 am on June 28 . Following this, her father Vincent, sister Angel Maria Vincent and other family members gave consent for organ donation .

With coordination by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) , her kidneys, liver, two corneas and a heart valve were retrieved and allocated to multiple recipients across Kerala. One kidney was transplanted at Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, while the other kidney and liver were allocated to patients at KIMSHEALTH Hospital . The heart valve was sent to the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology , and the corneas were transferred to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology . Officials said transplant procedures were carried out at respective centres, with six patients benefiting in total .

Health Minister K Muraleedharan praised the family’s decision, calling it a noble act of generosity amid grief .
