As Lagaan marks 25 years since its release , a lesser-known off-screen episode from its production has resurfaced one that saw the film’s Indian and British cast members face off in a real cricket match that ended in a decidedly one-sided result.

According to The Spirit of Lagaan , a book by production executive Satyajit Bhatkal, the British cast who portrayed colonial-era cricketers in the film were left frustrated by their on-screen defeat and pushed for a real-life “grudge match” after the shoot wrapped its cricket sequences in Gujarat.

The film, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and led by Aamir Khan, famously depicted villagers of Champaner defeating their British rulers in a high-stakes cricket match to escape oppressive taxation.

Bhatkal writes that the off-screen match, played on March 26, 2000, featured a mix of Indian cast and crew members technicians, lightmen and actors assembled by Aamir Khan, while the British side included several trained club cricketers, some with county-level experience.

The British team also faced shortages due to illness and injuries, leading to a light-hearted moment where Indian actor Aditya Lakhia was loaned to their side, drawing playful chants of “traitor” from the opposing camp.

Describing the atmosphere, Bhatkal noted that the toss between Aamir Khan and Chris England (who played British bowler “Yardley”) felt like an “England vs India” moment on set , complete with commentary and a scoreboard.

However, the contest itself was far from a cinematic drama. The British side, backed by stronger cricketing experience, went on to win comfortably. The Indian team responded by applauding their opponents in a gesture of camaraderie.

Beyond cricket, the film set also saw other bonding activities, including a table tennis tournament and informal card sessions that brought the Indian and British crews together during the seven-month shoot near Bhuj .

Lagaan , produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Gowariker, went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most iconic films, earning global acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film . It also featured performances by Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne, Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rajendra Gupta, with music composed by A. R. Rahman.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, the film is being re-released in theatres from June 12 to June 14.
