Heavy monsoon rains triggered a major safety concern in Maharashtra’s Raigad district after floodwaters from the swollen Patalganga River swept away nearly 3,000 LPG cylinders from the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) LPG plant on Wednesday.

The intense rainfall caused flooding at the HPCL facility, leading to both filled and empty LPG cylinders being carried away by the rising waters. Several cylinders entered the Patalganga River and Kharpada Creek , prompting authorities to launch immediate monitoring and recovery operations.

Raigad District Collector Kishan Jawale urged residents living near the affected waterways to avoid approaching or touching the floating cylinders, warning that they could pose a serious risk due to possible gas pressure buildup and explosion hazards .

Officials advised people to immediately inform local authorities if they spot any cylinders instead of attempting to retrieve them themselves. Teams have been deployed to track and recover the cylinders while keeping a close watch on areas downstream.

The administration said there have been no reports of injuries so far and that safety measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. The recovery operation is being carried out despite continuing rainfall in parts of the district.

The incident comes as several parts of Maharashtra witness heavy monsoon activity, with overflowing rivers and waterlogging affecting normal life in some regions. Authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious and follow safety instructions until all displaced cylinders are secured.

HPCL officials and district authorities are coordinating efforts to contain the situation and ensure the safe removal of the cylinders from the affected water bodies.
