At least 31 people were killed and over 160 others injured when a suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque in Islamabad during Friday prayers, authorities said. The blast took place at the Khadija Tul Kubra Imambargah in the Tarlai area , sending shockwaves through the capital.

Police reported that the attacker tried to enter the mosque but was stopped at the gate by security personnel and worshippers. He then detonated the explosives, killing dozens and injuring many others. Rescue teams and police rushed to the scene , and hospitals declared emergencies to treat the wounded.

Although no group immediately claimed responsibility, authorities said the bomber was a foreign national linked to Fitna al-Khwarij , a faction associated with the Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has been involved in previous sectarian attacks.

Senior officials strongly condemned the attack. President Asif Ali Zardari described it as a “crime against humanity” and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed a thorough investigation and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. Interior Ministry officials visited hospitals treating the injured and announced that security across the capital would be tightened.

Religious and community leaders condemned the bombing and called for unity across sects. They urged authorities to ensure the protection of places of worship and prevent further sectarian violence.

The attack occurred during the state visit of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev , raising concerns about security in the capital. It follows a series of militant attacks in Pakistan in recent months, including a suicide blast outside a court in Islamabad last year. Authorities have launched a full investigation and reinforced security at religious sites nationwide.
