A moderate earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district early on Monday, jolting residents from sleep, officials said. The tremor, measured between 4.6 and 4.7 magnitude , occurred at around 5.35 am at a shallow depth of about 10 km, according to seismic agencies. The Pattan area was identified as the epicenter.

The quake was felt across several parts of north Kashmir, prompting brief panic among residents in some areas, but no injuries, damage to property, or disruption to essential services were reported. Officials said the situation is being closely monitored as a precaution.

This was the strongest tremor reported in the region in recent weeks . Baramulla last experienced a 3.0-magnitude earthquake on January 15, while an earlier 4.0-magnitude tremor in December 2024 also passed without causing damage.

Jammu and Kashmir lies in a seismically active Himalayan zone , where low to moderate earthquakes are relatively common due to the ongoing collision of tectonic plates. Authorities said such tremors are not unusual for the region, though disaster response teams remain on alert.
