A 4.7-magnitude earthquake , considered a light to moderate tremor that can be felt by people indoors and may cause minor shaking but typically results in little to no structural damage, struck Assam's Cachar district on Thursday night. The quake sent tremors across several parts of the Northeast, including Meghalaya, officials said. No casualties or damage to property were reported immediately after the incident.

According to the regional seismic office, the earthquake occurred at 9:10 pm at a depth of 39 km . The epicentre was located in Cachar district at latitude 24.941 degrees North and longitude 93.007 degrees East .

Residents in multiple areas of Assam reported feeling the tremors, while shaking was also experienced in Meghalaya, including Shillong. Authorities in the affected states said there were no immediate reports of loss of life or structural damage.

The earthquake once again highlighted the vulnerability of the Northeast, which falls within one of the world's most seismically active regions . The area frequently experiences earthquakes of varying magnitudes due to its complex geological setting.

Disaster management authorities continue to stress the importance of earthquake preparedness measures , including adherence to seismic building standards, regular emergency response drills, public awareness campaigns, and maintaining emergency supplies. Experts advise residents in earthquake-prone regions to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols during and after seismic events.

While Thursday's tremor caused no significant disruption, officials said monitoring efforts remain in place to track any aftershocks or related seismic activity in the region.
