The Andhra Pradesh government is taking proactive steps to ensure that farmers receive quality seeds at subsidised prices ahead of the Kharif 2026 season , according to Kalyandurg MLA Amilineni Surendra Babu . He said the initiative reflects the special focus being placed on agriculture by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu .

The MLA was speaking at a programme organised for the distribution of subsidised groundnut, red gram and millet seeds at the local Praja Vedika. The event marked the launch of seed distribution in the constituency, with agriculture officials noting that Kalyandurg was the first in the district to begin the process for the upcoming cultivation season.

Addressing farmers, Surendra Babu said around 5,000 farmers had registered for seeds in the constituency. To meet the demand, nearly 2,200 quintals of groundnut seed pods have already been made available. He urged farmers to make informed crop choices, pointing to forecasts that suggest the possibility of reduced rainfall due to El Niño conditions this year.

In view of the anticipated weather conditions, the MLA advised cultivators to consider crops such as red gram, bajra, jowar and other millets , which are better suited to water-scarce conditions. Encouraging crop diversification, he said such crops could help farmers minimise risks associated with uncertain monsoon patterns.

Surendra Babu also informed farmers that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to launch the PM-Kisan and Annadata Sukhibhava schemes at a programme in Kolkata on June 20, enabling direct transfer of financial assistance into farmers’ bank accounts. He added that the government is also planning to extend support through the distribution of tractors, drip irrigation systems and sprinkler equipment to improve agricultural productivity.

Highlighting irrigation infrastructure, the MLA said the long-pending Bhairavanithippa Project has been accorded priority status with the support of Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu and is targeted for completion by 2028 . He also revealed that proposals have been prepared for the construction of a summer storage tank near Jambagumpula in Kundurpi mandal , aimed at strengthening water availability for farming activities.

The MLA further stated that farmers would be guided on the efficient use of urea and DAP fertilisers through the APAIMS 2.0 application , helping ensure balanced fertiliser consumption and timely supply based on crop requirements.

Criticising the previous YSRCP government , Surendra Babu alleged irregularities in the handling of agricultural equipment meant for farmers. He said the present coalition government is focused on restoring efficiency in governance and delivering agricultural support schemes in a transparent manner.
