Thane Police destroyed over 600 kg of seized narcotics worth Rs 39.03 crore on Friday as part of the nationwide Nashamukt Bharat Abhiyan marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking . The contraband, linked to 112 offences , was incinerated at the Mumbai Waste Management facility in Taloja MIDC, Navi Mumbai , reaffirming the Maharashtra Police's commitment to eliminating the drug menace and protecting young people from substance abuse.

The destroyed narcotics included mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 13.43 crore , charas worth Rs 20.98 crore , ganja worth Rs 1.13 crore , along with hybrid cannabis , brown sugar , and other prohibited substances. Officials said the drugs had been seized in 112 NDPS cases registered over the past three years across the Thane Police Commissionerate. The disposal was carried out under the supervision of the Central Contraband Destruction Committee after completion of all legal formalities.

The operation formed part of a wider anti narcotics campaign across Maharashtra. On the same day, Navi Mumbai Police destroyed seized drugs worth Rs 56.69 crore in 26 cases , taking the combined value of narcotics destroyed by the two commissionerates to nearly Rs 96 crore . Navi Mumbai Police also conducted awareness programmes on the dangers of drug abuse for around 5,000 students across 25 schools and colleges , reinforcing prevention alongside enforcement.

The drive coincided with the Union government's intensified anti drug campaign. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently launched the nationwide Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign , aimed at destroying more than 2 lakh kg of seized narcotics worth around Rs 6,000 crore , underscoring the Centre's renewed focus on dismantling drug trafficking networks and building a drug free India.
