A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was shot dead in what police believe was a targeted attack in Toronto, Canada, prompting the arrest of a 37-year-old Indian-origin man on charges of first-degree murder.

The victim, identified as Navneet Kaur, was attacked on Friday morning near the intersection of Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard, according to the Toronto Police Service.

Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at around 7:23 am and found Kaur suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Kaur and the accused, Sharnjeet Singh of Brampton, had a brief interaction moments before the shooting. Singh allegedly opened fire before fleeing the area on foot, triggering an intensive search by law enforcement agencies.

The suspect was later located and arrested by the Ontario Provincial Police. He has been charged with first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking.

According to investigators, preliminary findings suggest the attack was not random. Police believe Kaur was specifically targeted and have confirmed that there are no outstanding suspects. The Toronto Police Homicide Unit is continuing its investigation to establish the motive behind the killing.

A local media outlet, citing a witness, reported that Kaur was walking along Humberwood Boulevard when a man approached her, exchanged a few words, and then allegedly shot her once before fleeing. The witness immediately contacted emergency services after seeing her collapse.

The incident comes less than two weeks after another case involving members of the Indian diaspora in Canada. Earlier this month in Edmonton, 23-year-old Damanpreet Kaur was allegedly strangled to death in what police described as an intimate partner homicide. Her 22-year-old partner, Ritish Kumar, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

The latest killing has once again drawn attention to violent crimes involving members of the Indian-origin community in Canada, even as investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding Navneet Kaur's death.
