Alexander Zverev is set to achieve a career-defining milestone when he becomes the world’s top-ranked men’s tennis player for the first time on Monday, following his impressive run at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

The 29-year-old German secured the date of his rise to the top after defeating Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-5 on Thursday to book his place in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Zverev’s elevation to No. 1 had already been assured by the end of the season, but his victory in Vienna confirmed that the historic change would take place when the next ATP rankings are released on Monday.

The German will replace Jannik Sinner at the summit, irrespective of how he performs in his remaining matches in Vienna. Sinner announced the end of his season three weeks ago due to inflammation in his right knee.

Speaking after his victory, Zverev described the achievement as an extraordinary feeling, saying reaching the top of the rankings was different from winning a tournament or a title.

His rise will also mark a significant moment in tennis history. Zverev will become the 30th different player to occupy the No. 1 position since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973.

At 29, he will also become the oldest first-time world No. 1 since John Newcombe, who reached the top at the age of 30 in 1974.

For Zverev, Monday’s rankings update will represent the culmination of years of hard work and a major landmark in his professional career.
