Tennis legend Novak Djokovic has praised Serbia’s student-led movement following its election victory over the ruling political camp of President Aleksandar Vučić, saying the young protesters have created a “sense of pride” among people both at home and abroad.

Speaking at a press conference at the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Djokovic expressed happiness over the political development and admiration for the students who had spent two years protesting against the government.

“I’m very happy about it,” Djokovic said, paying tribute to the young people for their dignity and resilience despite what he described as enormous pressure.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion said the movement had earned widespread admiration through the way its members conducted themselves during the prolonged protests. He added that their efforts had generated pride not only among Serbians but also among people living outside the country.

Djokovic, who now lives in Greece, has publicly supported the student protests on several occasions. His latest remarks add a prominent sporting voice to the attention surrounding Serbia’s student-led political movement.

The election pitted Vučić and his right-wing party against a diverse opposition movement led by students, who had spent the past two years challenging his government. Vučić conceded defeat on Sunday, marking a major development in the country’s political landscape.

Looking ahead, Djokovic said the outcome had raised hopes for Serbia’s future, expressing optimism that the country would prosper and that its people would benefit from the opportunities ahead.

“The victory is secured and we all now have hopes that our country will be prosperous and that we’ll be enjoying the future that is coming,” he said.

Djokovic’s comments underline the wider public attention surrounding the student movement, whose sustained protests have become a significant force in Serbia’s political debate.
