ABVP Objects To Umar Khalid Documentary Screening At NALSAR

The Telangana unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has objected to the screening of a documentary on Umar Khalid at NALSAR University of Law, and urged the university authorities to take action against those involved.

According to the ABVP, the documentary titled Prisoner No. 626710 was screened by a group of students on September 23 during an event attended only by students. The organisation alleged that the screening was held without permission from the NALSAR administration.

Speaking to ANI, ABVP joint secretary Raju said the organisation opposed the screening and demanded that the university Vice-Chancellor initiate action against those who organised or participated in the event. ABVP leaders alleged that Khalid had made remarks they described as anti-national and claimed that he had expressed support for Pakistan and “Free Kashmir”.

ABVP Hyderabad City secretary Prithvi said representatives of the organisation would meet the NALSAR Vice-Chancellor through democratic means and submit a complaint over the screening.

He said the ABVP would urge the university authorities not to allow the screening of documentaries or films concerning individuals who, according to the organisation, make statements against the country. The organisation also called upon universities to uphold democratic values while seeking action against those involved in the screening.

The objections come amid a broader debate on the role of universities as spaces for discussion and the extent to which controversial political content should be screened on campuses. The ABVP maintained that the NALSAR administration should examine the circumstances surrounding the event and take appropriate action.
