One of the accused in the 2020 murder of gangster Goldy Brar’s cousin was shot dead in a targeted attack near the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office in Punjab’s Mohali on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The victim, Gurwinder Singh alias Lambbad , had arrived at a local court along with his wife for a hearing in an opium recovery case when two unidentified assailants opened fire at him near his parked car. He died on the spot.

Based on a complaint filed by Gurwinder’s wife, Mohali police have registered a case under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Arms Act, against foreign-based gangster Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar .

According to police, the incident occurred around 3 pm when Gurwinder was opening the boot of his car after attending the court hearing. An assailant who was already waiting near the vehicle fired multiple rounds at point-blank range and fled. Another accomplice was waiting nearby on a motorcycle to facilitate the escape.

An eyewitness, an advocate by profession, said he initially mistook the sound of gunfire for a tyre burst before seeing a man “wearing a cap and having a fair complexion” firing repeatedly at Gurwinder.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Rupnagar Range , Nanak Singh said Gurwinder had been receiving threats from Goldy Brar prior to the killing. “The deceased had a criminal background and was also named as an accused in the Gurlal Brar murder case. This angle is being examined,” he said.

Gurwinder was on bail in a case related to the recovery of four kilograms of opium, police added.

Soon after the incident, an unverified social media post attributed to gangsters Goldy Brar, Rohit Godara and Vicky Pehlwan claimed responsibility for the killing, citing Gurwinder’s alleged role in the murder of Gurlal Singh Brar.

“We are investigating the matter. Multiple teams have been constituted for technical analysis, scientific investigation and human intelligence. We have leads and information on who got it done, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused at the earliest,” DIG Singh told reporters.

Goldy Brar, who is believed to be currently based in the United States, was designated a “terrorist” by the Indian government in 2024 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was earlier associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang but split from it last year and is now part of the Brar-Rohit Godara-Kala Jatheri gang.

Gurlal Singh Brar, cousin of Goldy Brar, was shot dead in Chandigarh in 2020 in a gang rivalry-linked murder. Gurwinder Singh was later named as one of the accused in that case. Police sources said the killing of Gurwinder appears to be a retaliatory attack connected to the earlier murder, indicating an ongoing cycle of revenge between rival criminal gangs operating from India and abroad.
