In a significant boost to urban infrastructure, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 230 million loan to modernise and expand Chennai's water supply and sanitation system, a move expected to benefit nearly 4.5 million residents across the Greater Chennai region.

As India's fourth largest city and one of its leading industrial and economic centres, Chennai has witnessed rapid urban expansion over the years. However, its water supply and sanitation infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with the city's growing population and rising demand. The latest financial assistance aims to bridge this gap by improving access to safe drinking water while strengthening the city's wastewater management network.

According to the ADB, the project is designed to deliver safe, reliable, and equitable water supply while enhancing sanitation services throughout the city. Beyond improving essential civic amenities, the initiative is also expected to increase climate resilience , promote better public health, improve the quality of urban life, and support a more efficient and financially sustainable water utility system.

The ambitious project includes the construction of more than 170 kilometres of new water supply and sewer pipelines , significantly expanding the city's distribution network. It will also modernise seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations , ensuring smoother operations and improved service delivery. In addition, the city's water utility assets and operational management will be strengthened through performance based contracts , helping improve efficiency and long term sustainability.

One of the project's most notable features is the introduction of a comprehensive ring main water distribution system , making Chennai the first Indian city to adopt this advanced model on such a scale. The closed loop network is designed to maintain balanced water pressure across the city, ensuring more reliable and equitable water distribution while improving resilience against natural disasters and climate related disruptions.

The investment builds on ADB's earlier support for Chennai's urban development and aligns with the Government of India's flagship programmes, including Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 and the Urban Challenge Fund .
