After days of disruptions, Lok Sabha holds uninterrupted question hour

After nearly a week of repeated disruptions, the Lok Sabha on Monday conducted the Question Hour without interruption , marking the first smooth session in the second leg of the Budget session. The calm came after days of protests over opposition demands for debates on the West Asia crisis and its impact on domestic fuel supplies.

When the House met, a few opposition members sought to raise urgent issues immediately. Speaker Om Birla requested that the Question Hour be allowed to proceed and assured MPs they would have time to speak after 12 noon. This enabled the House to complete its scheduled proceedings for the first time since the session began on March 9 .

Opposition MPs have been pressing the government for a debate on the West Asia crisis , linking it to rising LPG prices and supply concerns. During Monday’s Question Hour, members raised urgent energy-related issues , including possible LPG shortages and the effect of global tensions on India’s fuel imports, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz .

Questions focused on whether price hikes and restrictions on commercial and household LPG reflected actual shortages, and what measures the government was taking to ensure steady supplies. The government responded, assuring that there was no shortage for household consumers and emphasizing ongoing efforts to manage supply despite global volatility. Opposition leaders stressed the importance of energy security and price stability for millions of households.

Earlier in the week, political tensions escalated with an opposition resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Birla , accusing him of bias. The motion was defeated after a two-day debate. Birla had expressed deep concern over disruptions , including placards and slogans inside the House, and urged all parties to maintain discipline and ethical conduct .

Monday’s uninterrupted Question Hour, though routine, offered a brief respite from political standoffs, allowing lawmakers to focus on public concerns ranging from fuel security to broader energy policy, even as underlying tensions continue to simmer in Parliament.
