Ahmedabad Police have identified and detained 166 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly residing illegally in India after conducting a large-scale verification exercise under Operation Delta Hunt , officials said on Wednesday.

The operation was launched following intelligence inputs indicating that a significant number of Bangladeshi nationals had entered Gujarat unlawfully and were living in various parts of Ahmedabad without valid authorisation. The action was planned during a meeting chaired by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi .

According to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik , more than 30 teams comprising personnel from the Crime Branch, Special Operations Group (SOG) and local police stations carried out coordinated searches across areas including Naroda, Danilimda, Vatva, Vatva GIDC and Juhapura.

During the operation, police rounded up more than 300 individuals whose identities and residency status required verification. Through document checks, interrogations and identity verification procedures, authorities confirmed that 166 of them were Bangladeshi nationals residing in the country illegally. Verification of more than 150 others is still underway.

Investigators have also found that some of the detained individuals had allegedly obtained Aadhaar cards through fraudulent means . Authorities are examining how these documents were secured and whether organised networks assisted in the process.

Officials said the probe is focusing on entry routes, employment activities, financial transactions and possible local facilitators who may have helped individuals obtain identity documents, accommodation or jobs.

The operation highlights the growing role of intelligence gathering, Aadhaar verification and inter-agency coordination in detecting illegal immigration. Authorities believe such measures can help identify document fraud, track movement patterns and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

Police said that, following legal procedures, the detained individuals would be deported. Malik noted that 465 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Gujarat were deported last year , and similar action would be taken in the present case.

The findings from Operation Delta Hunt are expected to contribute to stronger verification systems and future immigration enforcement efforts across Gujarat and other states.
