AIADMK-TVK War of Words Signals New Phase of Tamil Nadu Opposition Battle

A fresh political confrontation erupted in Tamil Nadu on Friday after AIADMK leader R B Udhayakumar strongly criticised Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) over alleged attempts to attract cadres from rival parties ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections . The clash comes as political parties intensify efforts to strengthen their grassroots base and expand influence before the state heads into a crucial electoral battle next year.

The remarks came in response to statements made by TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna , who claimed that a significant section of AIADMK workers had shifted allegiance to the Vijay-led party following the Assembly election results. Rejecting the assertion, R B Udhayakumar warned that any attempt to weaken the AIADMK through inducements or political pressure would provoke a strong response from party cadres.

Addressing reporters, the former minister accused TVK of attempting to expand its political footprint through “money power” and strategic bargaining rather than long-standing grassroots support. He described Arjuna as a leader lacking ideological consistency and questioned the credibility of his claims about AIADMK cadre defections.

Udhayakumar maintained that the AIADMK’s organisational structure remained strong under the leadership of Edappadi K Palaniswami despite the party’s electoral setbacks. He said the AIADMK had weathered victories and defeats in the past and would continue to remain a major political force in Tamil Nadu.

He also argued that TVK was exaggerating its post-election influence by portraying itself as the principal alternative to the ruling DMK. According to him, the anti-incumbency sentiment reflected in the elections could not automatically be interpreted as a direct endorsement of TVK’s political agenda.

The sharp exchange underscores the changing dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics in the aftermath of the elections, with opposition parties now engaged in an intense struggle for relevance, cadre strength and political space . Vijay’s emergence as a political player has added new pressure on established Dravidian parties, triggering concerns over defections, shifting loyalties and the fragmentation of the opposition landscape.

Political observers believe the friction between AIADMK and TVK could deepen further in the coming months as parties recalibrate strategies and attempt to consolidate their support base after the electoral contest.
