AICC Secretary Suraj Hegde Passes Away, Leaders Recall His Commitment to the People

The Congress party and Karnataka's political fraternity were left mourning on Monday following the sudden demise of senior leader Suraj Hegde , who served as AICC Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Karnataka Government's Guarantee Committee . He was 55.

Hegde passed away late Sunday night at a private hospital in Bengaluru after suffering a cardiac arrest , according to party sources. His untimely death has come as a shock to colleagues, party workers and supporters across the state, many of whom remembered him as a committed organiser with a strong grassroots connect.

A prominent Congress functionary, Hegde held several important responsibilities during his political career. He previously served as the in-charge of the Indian Youth Congress and played a significant role in strengthening the party's organisational structure. He was also actively involved in the implementation and outreach of Karnataka's flagship guarantee schemes .

Born into a distinguished political family, Hegde was the grandson of former Karnataka Chief Minister Devaraj Urs , whose legacy remains closely associated with social justice and the empowerment of marginalised communities. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Hegde as a valued colleague whose contribution to the Congress organisation was immense. He praised Hegde's organisational skills, dedication to public welfare and strong rapport with party workers.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B K Hariprasad remembered Hegde as a leader who devoted his life to the welfare of backward classes, Dalits and marginalised sections of society. He said Hegde played a key role in ensuring that welfare initiatives reached the people and termed his death a major loss for both Karnataka and the Congress party.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also condoled Hegde's demise, joining several political leaders in paying tribute to his years of public service and commitment to the party.
