AIFF Secures Bengal Support for Historic India vs Brazil Clash on October 3

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has assured the All India Football Federation (AIFF) of full government support for hosting India's historic international football match against five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil in Kolkata on October 3, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey said on Friday.

The assurance comes as preparations gather pace for what is expected to be the biggest international football fixture ever staged in India. The AIFF had earlier faced questions over crowd management following the massive turnout during Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata last December.

Chaubey said he had briefed the Chief Minister about FIFA's standard operating procedures and logistical requirements. According to him, the state government has committed assistance from multiple departments to ensure the match is conducted smoothly and in full compliance with FIFA protocols.

Addressing concerns over crowd control, Chaubey stressed that an official FIFA international differs significantly from a celebrity appearance. He said such matches involve detailed planning by FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and several operational agencies, making the event far more structured.

Calling the fixture an opportunity beyond football, Chaubey said it would showcase Kolkata, West Bengal and Indian football before a global audience while strengthening India's reputation as a capable host of major sporting events.

The AIFF chief described the match as a crucial learning experience for the national team, currently ranked 138th in the FIFA rankings, against fifth-ranked Brazil. He said regular exposure to elite opponents would help Indian players identify weaknesses and raise their competitive standards.

Chaubey acknowledged that persuading Brazil to play India was challenging because of the ranking gap. However, he said persistent efforts and India's growing global significance eventually helped secure the prestigious fixture.

Recalling past visits by football legends such as Pelé, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, Chaubey noted that India has never before hosted an official international against a top-five FIFA-ranked nation, making the October encounter a landmark moment for Indian football.
