AIIMS Bibinagar , Telangana's premier Central medical institute, is set to become fully operational by December 2026 , marking a significant milestone in the Centre's drive to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country. Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda , who reviewed the institute's progress on Thursday, said the facility is rapidly evolving into a major hub for advanced healthcare, medical education and research in South India.

Addressing the media after inspecting the campus, Nadda said India's healthcare sector has witnessed an unprecedented transformation over the past 12 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi . He said the Centre has expanded healthcare services at every level by investing in AIIMS institutions , upgrading medical infrastructure and improving access to quality treatment.

The minister noted that India had only one AIIMS in New Delhi until the end of the 20th century. While six more institutes were sanctioned during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee , only one was established during the UPA government. Since 2014, the NDA government has approved 19 new AIIMS , taking the total to 23 institutes , of which 18 are already operational , with the remaining under various stages of construction.

Highlighting the Centre's emphasis on grassroots healthcare, Nadda said nearly 1.85 lakh Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (Ayushman Arogya Mandirs) have been established nationwide. These centres provide comprehensive primary healthcare, including maternal and child health services, screening for lifestyle diseases, mental healthcare and essential medicines, particularly benefiting rural communities.

Referring to AIIMS Bibinagar , the minister said the institute has made remarkable progress within a short span. Built under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) and spread across nearly 200 acres , Telangana's first AIIMS is steadily expanding its clinical and academic footprint. Outpatient services are now available across all major departments, with nearly 1,800 patients visiting the hospital daily . Inpatient care has also commenced, while telemedicine services have reached more than 1.56 lakh people , extending specialist consultations to remote areas.

The institute is also emerging as a centre for medical innovation , with ₹64 crore sanctioned for research projects. The funding is expected to strengthen clinical research, public health studies and technology-driven healthcare, enhancing the institute's role beyond patient care.

Lauding its community outreach, Nadda said AIIMS Bibinagar has established the country's first AIIMS-operated Community Radio station , which promotes awareness on preventive healthcare, nutrition, maternal health and disease prevention among rural populations.

Expressing confidence in the institute's future, the minister said AIIMS Bibinagar is well positioned to become one of South India's leading centres for healthcare, medical education and biomedical research , while assuring continued Central Government support for its timely completion and long-term growth.
