
AIIMS, BPL Technologies Join Hands to Advance AI-Based Mammography
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has transferred an artificial intelligence-based mammography technology to BPL Technologies Ltd, paving the way for its further development, validation and potential clinical use.
The technology transfer took place on September 16 in the presence of AIIMS Director Dr Nikhil Tandon and BPL Technologies CFO Ajay Jindal, the institute said on Thursday.Developed by AIIMS-Delhi, the AI-based mammography interpretation model is designed to support radiologists in analysing mammography examinations, particularly in areas where specialised breast-imaging experts are limited.
AIIMS said the transfer is part of an industry-academia collaboration aimed at taking research developed at the institute towards further development, validation and potential implementation in clinical settings.
Dr Tandon stressed the importance of translating research generated by academic institutions into solutions that address real-world healthcare needs. He expressed hope that the initiative would encourage more such developments at AIIMS and strengthen its focus on innovation, technology development and the translation of biomedical research into clinical applications.
The technology was developed by a multidisciplinary group comprising researchers from AIIMS' radiology and machine-learning engineering teams.
Dr Krithika Rangarajan, Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology, acknowledged the contributions of the AIIMS technology team, research section and the Ministry of Education, which funded the project.
The project also involved radiologists Dr Amit Gupta and Dr Varun Holla, machine-learning engineers Om Shivom, Kushagra Chaturvedi and Aashish Rastogi, and a managerial team led by Hema Malhotra.
The transfer ceremony was attended by Prof Govind Makharia, Associate Dean (Research), Prof Velpandian, Head of the IPR Cell, and Prof Smriti Hari, Professor in the Department of Radiology, along with senior members of BPL Technologies.
AIIMS said the transfer provides a pathway for the technology to undergo further development and validation, with potential implementation in clinical practice.
