In a move expected to bring relief to international travellers, Air India has reduced fuel surcharges on flights to North America, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom , reversing part of the additional burden imposed on passengers during the recent spike in global fuel prices.

The revised surcharge rates came into effect on July 1 , following a sustained decline in crude oil and jet fuel prices after months of volatility triggered by the West Asia conflict . Industry experts believe the reduction could lead to lower overall ticket costs on some of Air India's busiest long-haul routes and may encourage other airlines to review their pricing structures.

According to sources, the fuel surcharge on flights to North America and Australia has been reduced to USD 200 per ticket from USD 280 , while the surcharge on services to Europe and the UK has been cut to USD 125 from USD 205 . The latest revision represents a reduction of nearly 29 per cent on North America and Australia routes and about 39 per cent on Europe and UK services.

The surcharge was originally introduced by the Air India Group , comprising Air India and Air India Express , on April 7 and came into force from April 10 . At the time, airlines were grappling with soaring fuel prices and operational challenges arising from airspace restrictions linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Under the April revision, fuel surcharges ranged from USD 24 to USD 280 on most international routes, while domestic passengers were charged an additional ₹299 to ₹899 depending on distance. The airline had also shifted from a flat domestic surcharge to a distance-based pricing grid after the government capped domestic Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price hikes at 25 per cent .

The decision to reduce the levy comes amid a sharp correction in energy markets. When the surcharge was imposed, Air India had cited data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showing that the global average jet fuel price had surged to USD 195.19 per barrel for the week ending March 27, up from USD 99.40 per barrel at the end of February—an increase of nearly 100 per cent within a month.

Since then, crude oil prices have softened considerably, falling below USD 70 per barrel by the end of June as concerns over supply disruptions eased and geopolitical tensions showed signs of stabilising. The decline has provided much-needed breathing room for airlines worldwide, for whom fuel remains the single largest operating expense. Aviation industry estimates suggest that ATF accounts for nearly 40-45 per cent of an airline's total operating cost .

For passengers, the impact could be significant. Travel industry executives estimate that a family of four travelling to destinations such as the United States, Canada, Europe, the UK or Australia could save the equivalent of several hundred dollars compared with fares that included the higher surcharge. On premium long-haul routes, the reduction is expected to translate into noticeable savings in the overall ticket price.

While the revised surcharge applies only to flights serving North America, Australia, Europe and the UK , fuel levies on other international routes and domestic services remain unchanged. Air India has not issued an official statement on the latest revision.

The move also reflects improving conditions in the broader aviation sector. Air India Express recently restored its full network of services across West Asia after temporary disruptions caused by the regional conflict, signalling a gradual return to operational normalcy for Indian carriers.

Industry observers say the surcharge rollback could be an early indication of softer international airfares if fuel prices remain stable in the coming months. However, airlines are expected to remain cautious, as geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuations in crude oil markets continue to pose risks to operating costs.

For now, the reduction offers a welcome respite for international travellers and underscores how closely airline ticket prices remain tied to global energy markets.
