Air India Plane Takes Wrong Turn at Ahmedabad Airport, Enters IndiGo Aircraft's Path
An Air India aircraft mistakenly entered the path of an IndiGo plane while taxiing at Ahmedabad airport on Wednesday evening, prompting both aircraft to halt on the same taxiway before any safety risk materialised.
According to sources, the Air India flight arriving from Mumbai took a wrong turn after landing while heading towards its designated parking bay. The aircraft subsequently came onto the same taxiway as an IndiGo flight preparing for departure to Mumbai.
The two aircraft, both Airbus A320 narrow-body jets , reportedly stopped at a distance of around 200 metres from each other . Airport authorities were immediately informed, and normal operations resumed after the Air India aircraft was moved.
In a statement, Air India said its flight AI 2493 , operating from Mumbai to Ahmedabad on June 24, had "inadvertently taken a wrong turn during taxiing" after landing. The airline maintained that there was no compromise to passenger or crew safety and said the aircraft was later towed back to the parking bay.
"The matter has been reported to the regulatory authorities and an investigation initiated," the airline said.
IndiGo also confirmed the incident, stating that its flight 6E 5160 , scheduled to operate from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, experienced a brief delay while taxiing for departure after an aircraft from another airline entered its path due to an incorrect turn.
"Both aircraft came to a halt at a safe distance from each other. The other aircraft was subsequently towed away, and our flight departed and landed safely at Mumbai," IndiGo said in a statement.
The incident has drawn attention to ground movement procedures and taxiway navigation at busy airports , though both airlines stressed that safety protocols functioned as intended and no passengers were endangered.
The number of passengers onboard the two aircraft was not immediately known.
