Ajinkya Rahane Retires, Leaves Legacy of India's Greatest Overseas Triumphs

Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing the curtains down on a distinguished career that spanned more than a decade. The 38-year-old, who played a pivotal role in India's rise as a formidable overseas Test side, said the time was right to "move on," ending an international journey marked by resilience, composure and selfless leadership.

Rahane represented India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is, amassing 8,414 international runs with 15 centuries, including 12 Test hundreds. Although he last played for India during the 2023 Test series in the West Indies, he continued to feature in domestic cricket and captained Mumbai until the 2024-25 season, despite falling out of the national selectors' plans.

Paying tribute, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said Rahane's contribution could not be measured by statistics alone. The Board described him as a cricketer who brought "assurance to the Indian team, calm in moments of pressure", while earning admiration for his humility, professionalism and unwavering commitment to putting the team first.

Rahane's career mirrored India's transformation into one of the world's strongest touring Test teams. Widely regarded as one of India's finest overseas batters, he produced memorable centuries at Lord's, Wellington, Melbourne, Kingston and Durban, showcasing the technique and temperament required to succeed in challenging conditions. His ability to absorb pressure and deliver in difficult situations earned him the reputation of a dependable crisis batter, particularly in England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The defining chapter of his career came during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. After India's infamous 36 all out in Adelaide and the departure of regular captain Virat Kohli, Rahane assumed leadership under extraordinary circumstances. He responded with a match-defining 112 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, inspiring India to level the series before guiding an injury-hit squad to a remarkable 2-1 triumph. The historic victory at The Gabba, which ended Australia's 32-year unbeaten record at the venue, is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in Indian Test history.

Though never India's full-time captain, Rahane's calm tactical approach and faith in young players made him one of the country's most successful stand-in leaders. He also bridged generations, sharing the dressing room with legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid, before mentoring emerging stars including Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur during India's memorable Australian campaign.

BCCI President Mithun Manhas said Rahane's career exemplified what it means to put the team first, while Secretary Devajit Saikia praised his sincerity and integrity. Rahane retires with a Test record of 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, but his enduring legacy lies beyond numbers as the quiet architect of India's overseas success and a leader who consistently rose to the occasion when his team needed him most.
