Ajit Doval Heads to Beijing as India-China Border Talks Return to Centre Stage

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to arrive in Beijing on Monday for a fresh round of high-level talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as India and China seek to manage their complex relationship amid renewed concerns over activity along the border.

Doval and Wang, the designated Special Representatives for the boundary dialogue, are scheduled to hold the 25th round of Special Representatives talks on Tuesday. The mechanism, established in 2003, was created to find a comprehensive solution to the long-running boundary dispute between the two Asian powers.

While the talks have yet to produce a final settlement to the 3,488-km boundary dispute, the Special Representatives mechanism has remained an important channel for addressing tensions and maintaining engagement between New Delhi and Beijing.

This week's meeting carries added significance as it comes ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to participate, though there has been no official confirmation. His possible visit could also open the door for another meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, potentially giving both sides an opportunity to discuss the next steps in improving bilateral ties.

The discussions come against the backdrop of lingering sensitivities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently underlined that peace and tranquillity in border areas remain essential for stable relations with China, noting that the situation at the frontier directly influences the broader relationship.

India has also raised concerns over reports of increased Chinese military activity near Arunachal Pradesh. Beijing, however, has maintained that the border situation is generally stable and said both sides remain in communication through diplomatic and military channels.

With the border issue once again under the spotlight, the Doval-Wang meeting in Beijing could provide an important indication of whether India and China are prepared to build on recent engagement and push their relationship towards greater stability.
