Alexander Zverev Storms Into US Open Semifinals, Sets Up Khachanov Clash

Alexander Zverev has transformed a difficult start at the US Open into another impressive Grand Slam run, reaching the semifinals with a commanding 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Botic van de Zandschulp.

The top-seeded German will face Karen Khachanov in Friday's semifinal, while American duo Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe will meet in the other last-four clash.

Zverev's progress is particularly notable because he has now reached the semifinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments this season. The French Open champion and Wimbledon runner-up also owns a remarkable 23-2 record at the majors in 2026.

His campaign in New York, however, began with two exhausting five-set matches that lasted more than four-and-a-half hours each. Zverev has since found another level, winning his next three matches in straight sets and spending no more than two-and-a-half hours on court in any of them.

The German, who lost the 2020 US Open final after surrendering a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem, is now chasing a second Grand Slam title of the season.

Khachanov booked his place in the semifinals when Alexander Blockx retired during the third set because of multiple injuries. The Belgian, who was trailing 6-2, 7-5, 3-2, had been struggling with problems involving his leg, ribs and back.

“I think my body just gave up,” Blockx said after ending his run.

Khachanov, the No. 28 seed, had been expecting a demanding contest but noticed his opponent's physical problems worsening as the match progressed. The Russian is now through to his third Grand Slam semifinal, having previously reached this stage at the US Open in 2022 and Australian Open in 2023.

He is also enjoying his deepest run at a major this season after reaching at least the third round at all four Grand Slams.

Zverev will enter the semifinal as the favourite, but Khachanov's experience and improved Grand Slam form could make the contest a serious test.
