Alexandra Eala produced one of the biggest upsets of Wimbledon 2026 , knocking out defending champion Iga Swiatek with a stunning 7-6(9), 6-2 victory in the third round on Saturday. The remarkable win not only ended Swiatek's title defence but also created a landmark moment for Philippine tennis, as Eala became the first Filipino player, male or female, to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament .

The 21 year old left hander showed tremendous composure against one of the tournament favourites. After surviving a tense opening set, where she saved two set points in a dramatic tie break, Eala completely took control of the match. She dictated the rallies with fearless shot making and wrapped up the contest with a forehand winner on her third match point before collapsing onto Centre Court in celebration.

The emotional victory was made even more special by the strong support from Filipino fans inside the stadium. Holding back tears during her on court interview, Eala dedicated the historic achievement to her family, her country and young aspiring athletes back home, saying the moment meant everything to her.

Eala's rise has been one of the biggest stories in women's tennis over the past year. A product of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, she announced herself on the global stage with an impressive run to the Miami Open semifinals, where she had also defeated Swiatek. Her latest triumph confirms that performance was no one off success.

For Swiatek, the defeat marks a disappointing end to her Wimbledon campaign just a year after lifting her maiden title at the All England Club with a dominant victory over Amanda Anisimova in the 2025 final.

The surprises did not end there. Second seed Elena Rybakina , the 2022 Wimbledon champion , was also sent packing after a 7-6(4), 6-1 defeat to Belgium's Elise Mertens . The result guarantees that Aryna Sabalenka will remain the world No. 1 after the tournament. Mertens will next face Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams withdrew from the doubles event alongside sister Venus Williams because of a right knee injury suffered earlier in the tournament, bringing an unfortunate end to their much anticipated reunion.
