The preliminary hearing in the Charlie Kirk murder case moved forward on Thursday as prosecutors presented testimony that the defendant allegedly expressed regret after the fatal shooting, while the defence challenged key forensic evidence.

Tyler Robinson , who faces aggravated murder charges and has not entered a plea, is accused of fatally shooting Kirk during a public event at Utah Valley University . Authorities allege Robinson surrendered to police the day after the attack.

A key witness, Lance Twiggs , Robinson's roommate and romantic partner, told investigators that Robinson said he "wishes he hadn't done it" the day after the shooting. Prosecutors also allege Robinson left a note stating he intended to "take out Charlie Kirk" and later texted Twiggs that he targeted Kirk because he had "had enough of his hatred." Twiggs testified under an immunity agreement after recorded interviews were played in court despite defence objections.

The hearing also focused on DNA evidence linking Robinson to a bolt-action rifle and towel recovered near the crime scene. Defence lawyers questioned the testing, but forensic experts described DNA analysis as the gold standard in criminal investigations.

Judge Tony Graf will determine whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. Robinson's attorneys have also unsuccessfully sought to remove the death penalty as a possible sentence.

The killing of Charlie Kirk , a conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump known for mobilising young Republican voters during the 2024 U.S. election , has intensified concerns over political violence in the United States. The case remains under close scrutiny as investigators continue building their prosecution.
