Amaravati Assembly Design to Blend Global Standards with Telugu Heritage

The Andhra Pradesh government is stepping up efforts to shape the proposed Legislative Assembly building in Amaravati into a world-class landmark that combines cutting-edge architecture with the state’s rich cultural and democratic identity.

A high-level meeting at the State Secretariat brought together senior state leaders and representatives of Foster + Partners, the international architecture firm involved in the planning process. The discussions focused on creating an Assembly complex that reflects Telugu culture, artistic heritage, democratic values and the aspirations of a modern Andhra Pradesh.

The meeting was chaired by Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu and attended by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana, Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar, Legislative Secretariat Secretary General Prasanna Kumar Suryadevara, Foster + Partners partner and architect Pedro Haberbosch, CRDA Additional Commissioner Abhishek Kumar, Chief Engineer A.V. Rao and other officials.

The proposed complex is being planned with a strong emphasis on functionality and accessibility, catering to legislators, officials, media personnel and visitors. Discussions covered chambers for the Chief Minister, Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the Secretary General’s office, the Business Advisory Committee hall, offices for ministers and MLAs, and meeting rooms for various legislative committees.

The plans also include the main Assembly chamber, committee halls, conference rooms, MLAs’ lobbies, protocol areas, visitor galleries, public lounges and reception spaces. A dedicated media centre, press conference hall, media workstations and briefing facilities are also expected to be developed in line with international standards.

Technology will form a key part of the project, with proposals for advanced audio-visual systems, digital voting, electronic displays, modern communication networks, live telecast and broadcasting facilities, along with digital legislative systems.

The design will integrate comprehensive security and safety features, including dedicated entry routes, access control, security zones, parking, drop-off and pick-up areas, emergency exits, and fire and life-safety systems. Universal accessibility will be ensured through ramps, lifts and modern sanitation facilities.

Sustainability will also be central to the project, with provisions for natural lighting, ventilation, water conservation, rainwater management, eco-friendly construction and green building standards. The government aims to make the Amaravati Assembly more than an administrative building, a lasting symbol of democracy, Telugu heritage and Andhra Pradesh’s modern aspirations.
