Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket Face Karnataka Action Over Dhatura Sales

The Karnataka government has directed authorities to suspend the food licences of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket until further orders over the online sale and distribution of Dhatura fruits and seeds for food or human consumption.

The Food Safety and Drug Administration said the action was initiated after Dhatura products were found displayed for sale on certain online platforms operating under FSSAI licences or registrations. The department said the plant has toxic properties, and consumption of its fruits and seeds could cause serious adverse effects on human health.

Authorities have been instructed to take necessary action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and submit compliance reports immediately. The government has also ordered the suspension of licences and registrations of establishments and sellers supplying Dhatura products to the three e-commerce platforms.

All concerned food business operators have been directed to immediately remove online listings, advertisements and promotional material relating to Dhatura intended for food or human consumption. The sale, distribution, display for sale or promotion of the products for such purposes has been strictly prohibited.

The department said the online availability of Dhatura raised serious public health and food safety concerns, given its toxic nature. Food Safety Officers and Designated Officers have been instructed to take immediate action against establishments and sellers involved in supplying the products.

The suspension of the food licences of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket will remain effective until further orders. The department said the question of revoking the suspension would be considered separately after receiving compliance reports and providing the concerned parties an opportunity for a hearing.

Dhatura, commonly known as thorn apple, is a poisonous plant whose seeds and other parts contain toxic compounds. It is also known as Umathai in Tamil.

The Karnataka government has directed all concerned food business operators and online platforms to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the orders in the interest of public health and food safety.
