Americans Storm To 17-13 Presidents Cup Win As Fitzpatrick Claims French Open Title

The United States produced a stunning turnaround at Medinah to beat the International team 17-13 in the Presidents Cup, extending its winning streak in the biennial competition to 11 straight victories.

The Americans had been outplayed during the first three days of team matches and entered Sunday needing a strong response in the 12 singles contests. They delivered emphatically, winning nine singles matches and halving another after the contest had already been decided.

Two crucial comebacks on the back nine changed the momentum. Collin Morikawa, a two-time major champion, fought back in one match, while 21-year-old rookie Jackson Koivun produced another important turnaround. A late burst of American red numbers then completed the biggest Sunday rout in Presidents Cup history.

US captain Brandt Snedeker, who had earlier blamed himself for the team's three-point deficit, was left watching his players produce the response he needed. President Donald Trump was also at the first tee as the singles began.

In Paris, Matt Fitzpatrick claimed the French Open for his fourth title of the year after closing with a one-under 70. His five-shot overnight advantage was briefly reduced to two, but he recovered to win by three shots over Spain's Ángel Hidalgo, who shot 67.

The victory capped an eventful period for Fitzpatrick and his wife Katherine, who recently welcomed their first child. Local favourite Tom Vaillant finished tied third, while Hidalgo's runner-up finish secured him a place at next year's British Open at St Andrews.

On the LPGA Tour, Japan's Yuna Nishimura earned her first LPGA title at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship with a five-shot victory. She closed with a 66 for 21-under 192, while Aki Iwai, Chanettee Wannasaen and In Gee Chun shared second.

Elsewhere, Casandra Alexander, Kaito Onishi, Chien-yao Hung, Kyle De Beer and Shiho Kuwaki also claimed titles across the global tours.
