Andhra Pradesh Seeks Centre’s Support for Port-Led Growth and Maritime Infrastructure
Andhra Pradesh is stepping up efforts to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and accelerate port-led economic development, with state minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy held discussions with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi.
The meeting was also attended by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, reflecting the Centre and state's focus on enhancing coastal infrastructure and improving connectivity for key industrial and port projects in Andhra Pradesh.
During the discussions, Janardhan Reddy outlined several priorities related to the development of the state's port sector. He sought greater participation from the Visakhapatnam Port Authority in the development of the Mulapeta Port project and requested the Centre's support in facilitating the allocation of salt lands required for future port expansion initiatives.
The minister also pressed for the sanction of connectivity roads under the Sagarmala programme to improve access to Gangavaram Port and the port facilities linked to ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India in Anakapalli. Improved road infrastructure is expected to enhance cargo movement and strengthen industrial logistics in the region.
Another key issue raised during the meeting was the need for financial assistance for fishing harbour projects under the proposed Sagarmala 2.0 framework. Janardhan Reddy also sought full support from the Union government for the development of the Duggarajapatnam Mega Shipbuilding Cluster , a project seen as having the potential to boost shipbuilding capacity, attract investment and generate employment along the state's coastline.
According to the minister, the Andhra Pradesh government is committed to building a comprehensive maritime ecosystem that can position the state as a major port-driven economic hub on India's eastern seaboard. He said the coalition government is working closely with the Centre and industry stakeholders to expand maritime infrastructure, improve logistics networks and create new opportunities for trade, investment and employment.
The discussions are part of Andhra Pradesh's broader strategy to leverage its long coastline and strategic location to strengthen its role in India's growing maritime economy.
