Andreeva’s 50th Win Sets Up China Open Final Against Home Favourite Zheng Qinwen
Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva and Chinese star Zheng Qinwen stormed into the China Open final with convincing straight-sets victories on Saturday, setting up a high-stakes showdown between one of tennis’s brightest young talents and the home crowd’s favourite.
Zheng delighted the Beijing crowd by defeating Belgium’s Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-2 to become the first Chinese player to reach the final of the China Open, a tournament that has been held since 2004. The 24-year-old produced a strong finish, winning eight of the last 10 games to secure her place in her second career WTA 1000 final.
After a closely contested opening set, Zheng raised her level in the second, putting Mertens under sustained pressure and moving closer to a landmark title on home soil. With the local supporters firmly behind her, she will now have the opportunity to cap her campaign with a memorable victory in the Chinese capital.
Standing in her way is 19-year-old Andreeva, who continued her impressive season by sweeping past Czech player Nikola Bartunkova 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
The victory marked Andreeva’s 50th match win of the season, putting her level with American Jessica Pegula for the most victories on the WTA Tour, according to the governing body. The French Open champion has established herself as one of the leading players of the season, combining consistency with the ability to deliver in important matches.
Currently ranked No. 5 in the world, Andreeva is also set to climb two places in next week’s rankings, further strengthening her position among the women’s game’s elite.
The Russian had previously beaten Bartunkova, 20, in the third round of the US Open. The Czech, ranked No. 34, was unable to turn the tables in Beijing as Andreeva again dictated proceedings to reach the final.
The final now promises a compelling contest between Andreeva’s remarkable season-long consistency and Zheng’s bid to make history in front of her home supporters. For Zheng, victory would bring a major title within reach on familiar ground; for Andreeva, it offers another opportunity to add to an already outstanding campaign.
