Labour politician Andy Burnham has secured victory in the Makerfield by-election , returning to the House of Commons and intensifying speculation over the future leadership of Britain's governing Labour Party .

Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester , defeated Reform UK candidate Rob Kenyon in the northwest England constituency, a result widely seen as strengthening his position as a potential successor to Prime Minister Keir Starmer .

The by-election victory comes amid growing discontent within Labour over Starmer's leadership. Despite leading the party to a landslide election victory in 2024, Starmer has faced criticism over sluggish economic growth, cost-of-living pressures and Labour's disappointing performance in recent local elections.

Following his victory, Burnham pledged to bring political renewal , saying he would take the fight for change "as high as I can possibly take it." The 56-year-old, nicknamed the "King of the North" a nod to Game of Thrones and his advocacy for northern England built his reputation as Greater Manchester mayor , championing regional development and arguing that Manchester's growth model can be replicated nationwide.

Burnham's return to Westminster has fueled expectations that he could seek the party leadership and offer Labour a new direction at a time of growing internal unrest.

However, Starmer has made clear that he has no intention of stepping aside. Responding to speculation about a potential challenge, the prime minister said he would "fight" if a leadership contest were triggered and insisted he would not "walk away" from the mandate Labour received in the 2024 general election.

"I will fight if there's a challenge," Starmer said, reaffirming his commitment to remain in office despite mounting pressure from sections of his party.

The special election was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons stepped down, creating an opening for Burnham's return to Parliament. Under Labour Party rules, a leadership challenge requires the support of at least one-fifth of Labour MPs .

Political analysts say Burnham's victory, particularly against Reform UK in a closely watched contest, bolsters his credentials as a national figure capable of broadening Labour's electoral appeal. His arrival in Westminster is expected to increase pressure on Starmer and could accelerate discussions about the party's future direction.

With Starmer refusing to resign and Burnham now back in Parliament, Labour could be heading toward a defining internal battle that may shape both the party's leadership and the future of the UK government.
