Anna Hazare Stable After Hospitalisation in Mumbai Over Renal Infection

Veteran social activist Anna Hazare, 89, has been admitted to Bombay Hospital in Mumbai after blood tests indicated a renal infection, with doctors saying his condition is stable and improving.

Hazare was brought to the south Mumbai hospital on Monday night from his native Ralegan Siddhi village in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district, where he had initially received treatment at a local medical facility.

According to reports, the veteran activist had been unwell for several days and had also experienced a prolonged viral illness, dehydration and kidney-related health concerns. His blood reports later suggested a renal infection, prompting doctors to conduct a detailed assessment of his condition.

“According to Anna's blood reports, he had a renal infection, but he is doing fine now,” his aide Datta Awari said.

Hazare had reportedly been admitted to a hospital in Ahilyanagar last week and had recovered before his health concerns led to his transfer to Mumbai for further medical care.

The latest update from Bombay Hospital offered reassurance, with consultant physician Dr Gautam Bhansali saying Hazare was better, stable and recovering. Other reports also said he was fully oriented, communicating and eating and drinking comfortably, indicating positive signs during treatment.

Hazare has been kept under close medical observation while doctors continue detailed tests and assessments to determine the appropriate course of treatment.

The former Army serviceman-turned-social activist is widely known for his campaigns promoting rural development, transparency in governance and the fight against corruption. He emerged as a central figure in India’s massive 2011 anti-corruption movement, when his 13-day fast in New Delhi drew widespread support for a stronger Lokpal law.

Hazare is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.
