Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai on Wednesday said his newly launched “We the Leaders” movement is on the “right track” to be converted into a political party by July, with an ambitious target of 50 lakh members as it expands its base across the state.

In a video interaction on social media, Annamalai said the movement has already attracted around 18 lakh members , who, he claimed, have joined “without any expectations” . He added that the membership drive is being carried out through both online platforms and direct grassroots outreach , reflecting growing public engagement.

He said supporters believe the initiative will bring “meaningful change in Tamil Nadu politics” , and indicated that once it formally becomes a political party, its activities will take on a “new direction from July” , making its presence more visible in public life.

Annamalai asserted that the movement would remain committed to its core values, stating it would “not fail, not mislead people, and not take the wrong path” . He also stressed that the organisation follows an inclusive approach across all religions , positioning itself as a broad-based platform.

He further said the movement aims to evolve into a people-centric political force , focusing on key issues such as the drug menace among youth , which he said would be taken up as a mass grassroots campaign across Tamil Nadu.

Raising broader concerns, he said many educated professionals and technocrats in the 40–50 age group , including those working abroad, often lack a clear pathway to enter politics despite their capabilities. He argued that the system needs to make political participation more accessible to such sections.

He also announced that once the organisation becomes a political party, it would push for term limits for politicians , emphasising the need for regular leadership renewal and the entry of new faces into public life.

The proposed transition marks a significant step for the movement as it prepares to formally enter Tamil Nadu’s political landscape in the coming months.
