Anthropic AI Restrictions Spark Industry Backlash Over National Security Policy

A growing debate over AI export controls has intensified in the United States after more than 100 cybersecurity experts and industry leaders urged the Trump administration to lift restrictions on access to Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence models .

The appeal comes after the administration directed Anthropic to limit the use of its latest AI systems, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 , by foreign nationals over national security concerns . In response, the San Francisco-based AI company temporarily took the models offline, while maintaining that the government's actions were not justified by the risks identified.

In an open letter, cybersecurity professionals and executives from major technology firms argued that Anthropic's models, while highly capable of identifying software vulnerabilities and testing cyber defences , are not uniquely advanced compared with other available AI systems and open-source alternatives. The signatories warned that restricting access to cutting-edge American AI tools could weaken cyber defence efforts at a time when global rivals are rapidly advancing.

The letter highlighted concerns that China's AI capabilities are narrowing the gap with leading US models , raising questions about whether export restrictions could ultimately disadvantage American allies and security researchers more than potential adversaries.

The controversy marks one of the most significant tests of the Trump administration's emerging AI policy framework . Earlier this month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a process to assess the national security risks of advanced AI systems before their public release.

The dispute also reflects broader tensions between Anthropic and US defence agencies over the future use of AI in military applications. As policymakers weigh security concerns against innovation and global competitiveness , the debate is likely to shape the next phase of AI regulation and technological leadership .
