Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is grappling with an unprecedented situation: several TDP coalition MLAs are reportedly disregarding his directives, raising concerns about governance and accountability within the party.

Political analysts say this defiance marks a departure from past norms. Despite Chandrababu’s repeated warnings, MLAs continue engaging in behavior that critics describe as corrupt and inappropriate, both in the Assembly and in dealings with constituents. Pro-TDP media outlets have highlighted incidents suggesting that some MLAs are exerting undue pressure on ordinary citizens, including landowners, further fueling public dissatisfaction.

Chandrababu’s dilemma stems from the political reality of coalition politics. With a strong numerical presence in the Assembly and the TDP itself maintaining significant influence, the Chief Minister should, in theory, have considerable authority. Yet, the boldness of today’s MLAs appears to surpass what Chandrababu has encountered before. Their reluctance to heed warnings has prompted him to delegate the responsibility of monitoring their conduct to district in-charge ministers. Even then, questions remain about whether these ministers can effectively enforce discipline.

Insiders suggest that the root of the problem lies in party strategy. Many MLAs were reportedly selected based on their ability to fund election campaigns rather than prior political work. Having invested heavily in securing their positions, these legislators are now focused on recovering their expenses, leaving party leadership with limited leverage. Some MLAs argue that if they do not recoup their investments, they may not secure tickets in future elections, justifying their current behavior.

Despite being fully aware of the situation, Chandrababu appears constrained in taking direct action. While he publicly voices his frustration over the conduct of MLAs, the legislators continue their activities largely unchallenged. Political observers warn that if unchecked, this trend could lead to wider public discontent, putting both governance and the party’s credibility at risk.
