AP Election Commission Announces Indirect Poll Schedule for 100 AP Civic Bodies

The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has finalised the schedule for indirect elections to key leadership positions in 100 urban local bodies across the state, including 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats and 13 municipal corporations. Elections to the posts of deputy mayors and vice-chairpersons will be conducted on November 23, State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha announced while releasing the schedule on Wednesday.

As part of the preparations, election notices will be issued by November 18, giving the authorities time to complete the necessary arrangements. The exercise will cover deputy mayor positions in municipal corporations and vice-chairperson posts in municipalities and nagar panchayats.

Unlike direct elections, these positions will be filled through an indirect electoral process, in which elected ward members will choose one among themselves for the respective posts. The elections will take place in special council meetings attended by elected representatives of the concerned urban local bodies. The voting process is scheduled to begin at 11 am on November 23.

Unlike regular municipal elections, the indirect elections will not require a separate vote-counting schedule. Votes will be taken up and the results are expected to be declared on November 23 itself, after the voting process is completed at the respective council meetings. The presiding authorities will announce the outcome following the voting.

The State Election Commission has also announced November 24, 2026, as the alternative date. If unavoidable circumstances prevent the conduct of elections on November 23, the authorities must complete the exercise the following day, with voting scheduled for 11 am.

The Commission has instructed officials to issue notifications within the prescribed deadline and ensure that all arrangements are in place. It has emphasised strict compliance with statutory provisions and election guidelines to prevent irregularities.
