Andhra Pradesh Governor and President of the TB Association of Andhra Pradesh S. Abdul Nazeer has called for greater public participation in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), stressing that eliminating the disease requires a collective effort from society. He made the remarks while launching the 77th TB Seal Sale Campaign at the Darbar Hall of Lok Bhavan in Vijayawada on Wednesday.

The Governor said TB continues to pose a serious challenge despite decades of medical advances. Referring to the discovery of the TB-causing microorganism by Sir Robert Koch in 1882, he noted that 144 years had passed since the breakthrough, yet the disease had not been completely eradicated.

He pointed out that the impact of TB extends beyond healthcare, as the disease can also create social and economic hardships for patients and their families. Therefore, efforts to eliminate TB must go beyond providing medicines and treatment. He stressed the importance of early detection, preventive measures, public awareness, adequate nutrition and social support in reducing the burden of the disease.

The Governor also highlighted the history of the TB Seal campaign, saying it was first launched in Denmark in 1903 to raise support for children suffering from bone tuberculosis. The initiative subsequently developed into a wider campaign aimed at mobilising resources for TB prevention, patient care and awareness.

He said India has made considerable progress in strengthening its TB control efforts through the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, particularly in improving the identification, diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Referring to the Centre’s TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which aims to eliminate TB by 2030, Nazeer called for active participation from all sections of society. He said the TB Seal campaign provides an opportunity not only to raise funds but also to encourage people to understand the disease and contribute to elimination efforts.

The Governor appealed to citizens, educational institutions, industries, corporate organisations, voluntary groups and donors to support the campaign through contributions and community participation.
